The Aeropress has long held the top spot among portable immersion-and-press coffee brewers. Its strengths are its compact simplicity and outstanding cup quality. It’s fair to say the Aeropress has almost no weaknesses worth fixing. (Well — it doesn’t come with a cup.)

Wacaco wanted to create something equally practical that could bring great coffee brewing to people everywhere. After years of development, the Prestina was born.

The Prestina brews through immersion like a French press, and then presses like an Aeropress.

The difference is that everything you need is packed inside: a coffee scoop, a stirrer, a drip tray… and a drinking cup.

WHAT MAKES THE WACACO PRESTINA STAND OUT

The coffee is stirred and steeped in hot water for 1–2 minutes. A one-way valve holds the water in and prevents dripping, allowing the coffee to fully develop its flavor. Then through a compression mechanism via the one-way valve, the coffee is pressed directly into the included drinking cup.

The Prestina uses an ultra-fine metal filter that removes most fine sediment while still allowing natural coffee oils to pass through. The result is coffee that is not only rich and full-bodied, but also sweeter and more balanced.

SUGGESTED BREW RECIPE FOR THE PRESTINA

Prepare:

• 15g of coffee (medium roast recommended) — ground to a filter paper grind size
• Hot water heated to 92–94°C

Brew:

• Step 1: Pour 30ml of water and bloom for approximately 40 seconds.
• Step 2: Continue pouring to reach 225ml total. At 1 minute 30 seconds, use the included stirrer to stir gently for about 10 seconds, then close the lid.
• Step 3: At 2 minutes 30 seconds to 3 minutes, begin pressing gently. The press should take approximately 40 to 50 seconds.

DRAWBACKS OF THE WACACO PRESTINA

• Deep cleaning is fairly involved: The Prestina consists of 11 small components in total. Anyone who likes to keep everything completely dry after each use will find it takes noticeably more time than cleaning a simpler brewer — the Aeropress, for comparison, disassembles into just 4 pieces including the stirrer.
