The Guji highlands in southeastern Ethiopia are renowned for producing some of the world’s most distinctive coffees. The unique altitude and soil here give the coffee a vibrant aroma and remarkable complexity.
Among them, the 74112 variety naturally processed by the Goro station stands out as a particularly notable example.
GORO PROCESSING STATION
Goro is one of seven coffee processing stations operated by the coffee export company Buno General Trading, managed by Abiyot.
To produce high-quality specialty coffees, the station exclusively selects producers who supply the best lots. Larger farms of 8 to 15 hectares are given priority because improving harvesting methods and coffee quality on these farms is more manageable. This approach also makes it easier to create small individual farm lots and maintain full traceability.
The Goro processing station specializes in natural sun-dried processing. Multiple drying methods are tested before being officially adopted, in order to find and achieve the best results for each individual lot.
ABOUT THE ARABICA 74112 VARIETY
“74” is the collective designation for a group of Arabica varieties (74112, 74110, 74158) selected by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in 1974 from native African forest coffee populations. The goal of the program was to identify varieties with resistance to Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) that could deliver consistent yields while retaining their distinctive flavor character.

The 74112 coffee variety belongs to the compact Arabica group, with smaller foliage, leaves, and cherries compared to many other Arabica varieties.
What makes the 74112 particularly noteworthy is that it originates from the same mother tree and the same village of Bishari in Metu as the 74110 — earning it the reputation of being 74110’s twin. While both varieties share the same origin and disease resistance, 74112 stands out for its consistent yield, better adaptability to high altitudes, and brighter flavor potential compared to 74110. This has made it one of the most compelling varieties to emerge from Ethiopia’s Arabica breeding program.
When grown above 2,000 meters, 74112 benefits from a slow cherry ripening process that allows sugars and aromas to develop fully. Delicate floral notes of jasmine or orange blossom weave together with ripe, juicy fruit character. Compared to its “twin” 74110 — known for its warm, sweet profile — 74112 is lighter, more fruit-forward, and delivers a vibrant impression right from the first sip. Its acidity is bright and juicy, with citrus or ripe plum character.
In terms of body, 74112 has a medium structure with good balance. But its most distinctive quality is a long, clean finish that often evokes honey. This sets it apart as especially appealing to those seeking a bright, energetic coffee experience.
