Gesha is a demanding variety — low-yielding, sensitive, particular about its environment and altitude. Growing it is already a challenge, but coaxing out its truest flavor expression is even harder. Yet the Cajamarca region of Peru manages to do exactly that.
In 2025, Berg Wu selected a Gesha grown in Peru for his collection. This lot is processed using a fully traditional washed method, promising a flavor profile of exceptional purity.
ABOUT THE GESHA PANAMA T2722 VARIETY GROWN IN PERU
Gesha originates from the wild forests of the Bench Maji region of Ethiopia, where it was first discovered in the 1930s. Its journey took it through agricultural research centers and eventually to Panama, where Hacienda La Esmeralda elevated Gesha to worldwide fame.
The variety was sent to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania and then transported to Central America in 1953. The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center CATIE in Costa Rica catalogued this purebred Gesha under the code T2722 to distinguish it from other varieties sharing the same name but differing in genetic structure.
In the 1960s, T2722 was recognized for its resistance to coffee leaf rust. However, due to its brittle branches and low yield, it was not favored by farmers and never widely cultivated. It wasn’t until 2005, when the Peterson family in Boquete, Panama entered this coffee in the “Best of Panama” auction, that Gesha T2722 became truly famous. It received exceptional acclaim and broke the green coffee auction record at the time.
