Thanks to relentless innovation, a diversity of coffee varieties, deep technical knowledge, and a strong focus on coffee production, Costa Rica is now one of the most advanced coffee-producing countries in Central America.
Costa Rica is blessed by nature with an almost perfect climate for growing coffee: fertile volcanic soil provides abundant essential nutrients, and a stable warm climate brings predictable dry and rainy seasons. It’s no surprise that Costa Rican coffee is regularly regarded as some of the finest in the world.
There are eight coffee-growing regions: Guanacaste, Western Valley, Turrialba, Valle Central (Central Valley), Tres Rios, Brunca, Orosi, and Tarrazú — the latter being a distinct part of Valle Central.
WHERE IS BRUNCA ON THE COSTA RICA MAP?
The Brunca coffee-growing region is located in southern Costa Rica and includes the two youngest coffee-producing districts in the country, Coto Brus and Pérez Zeledón. The region borders Panama to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the south and west, and the Cordillera de Talamanca mountain range to the north — home to Chirripó, Costa Rica’s highest peak.
Don Claudio’s coffee farm is located in the Llano Bonito highlands of Naranjo, a fresh and peaceful town with excellent conditions for growing coffee — its altitude, soil, and microclimate make it a privileged location for high-quality coffee.
WHAT MAKES COSTA RICA’S WASHED PROCESSING DIFFERENT
Farmers selectively hand-pick the coffee cherries and transport them to a nearby wet mill. The mills use carefully designed processing methods to protect the environment from degradation.
In Costa Rica, this typically means using centrifugal force to remove mucilage rather than fermentation. This method reduces water usage and limits the amount of excess nutrients in the mill’s wastewater. The coffee is then washed clean and dried under the sun.
