Guji is a coffee-growing region in the Oromia zone of southern Ethiopia, and one of the few Ethiopian coffee names to rise to international prominence within a single generation. For much of the 20th century, coffee from this region was lumped together and exported under the broader label “Sidamo.”
Today, Guji coffee is bought, cupped, and named as its own distinct origin. Lots are now traceable down to the district, processing station, and in some cases even to the individual village level.

The Guji region sits on the southern Oromia highlands, east of Gedeo and southeast of Sidama.
ABOUT THE ARABICA 74158 VARIETY GROWN IN GUJI
“74” is the collective designation for a group of Arabica varieties (74112, 74110, 74158) selected by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in 1974 from native Metu Bishari African forest coffee populations. The goal of the program was to identify varieties with resistance to Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) that could deliver consistent yields while retaining their distinctive flavor character.
The 74158 variety is locally known as Walega. The trees reach a medium height well suited to highland cultivation in Ethiopia, where altitudes range from 1,800 to 2,350 meters above sea level. The cherries are quite small — similar in size to Kurume, a rare indigenous variety — but compensate with strong disease resistance and good yields in Ethiopia’s cool climate and fertile soils.

The 74158 coffee cherry is small in size, from a medium-height tree.
The flavor of 74158 achieves a harmonious balance between Ethiopia’s characteristic citrus florals and an unusually high natural sweetness. The acidity is present and clear but not sharp. The overall result is a sweet, approachable cup.
