Nariño is one of the most renowned coffee-growing regions in southwestern Colombia, nestled against the magnificent Andes mountain range. Its location near the equator at altitudes above 2,000 meters means it receives over 1,600 hours of sunlight per year. Even at night, heat accumulated at the bottom of the mountain valleys rises upward, protecting the coffee trees and cherries from the harsh cold of this high-altitude region.
The great elevation, consistent rainfall, and fertile volcanic soil provide an excellent growing environment for coffee. Notably, the coffee variety grown in Narino is Gesha T2722, introduced from Panama back in 1953.
ABOUT THE GESHA PANAMA T2722 VARIETY GROWN IN NARINO
Gesha originates from the wild forests of the Bench Maji region of Ethiopia, where it was first discovered in the 1930s. The variety’s journey took it through agricultural research centers and eventually to Panama, where Hacienda La Esmeralda would elevate Gesha to worldwide fame.
The Gesha variety was sent to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania and then transported to Central America in 1953. The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center CATIE in Costa Rica catalogued this Gesha under the code T2722 to distinguish it from other Gesha varieties sharing the same name but differing in genetic structure.
In the 1960s, T2722 was recognized for its resistance to coffee leaf rust. However, due to its brittle branches and low yield, it was not favored by farmers and therefore never widely cultivated. It wasn’t until 2005, when the Peterson family in Boquete, Panama entered this coffee in the “Best of Panama” auction competition, that Gesha T2722 truly became famous. It received exceptional acclaim and set a green coffee auction record at the time.
ABOUT THE FLORAL PROCESSING STATION IN COLOMBIA
Amid the growing trend of experimental fermentation methods in Colombia, the newly established Floral Station stands out for its commitment to classic washed processing. The station’s goal is true to its name: to honor the floral character of coffee through the purest processing method possible.
The coffee cherries are depulped and the fruit flesh removed, then soaked in water tanks to wash away any remaining mucilage on the surface. Once fermentation has run its course, the beans are thoroughly rinsed and dried under sunlight.
The washed processing method produces a cleaner and fresher flavor profile compared to natural dry processing. Coffee processed this way tends to be light, with bright acidity and distinct fruit-forward flavors.
FLAVOR PROFILE OF GESHA COLOMBIA NARINO WASHED
The signature aroma of the Gesha T2722 variety is jasmine and stone fruit — peach, orange, and passionfruit. Narino’s distinctive geography and climate layer in a sweetness reminiscent of soft candy and cacao.
Served hot, the Gesha Narino opens with prominent jasmine and lavender. Stone fruit flavors of peach and orange follow. The finish is sweetly fragrant and lingers.
As it cools, a finish of stone fruit, sweet candy, and cacao stays long after each sip. This is what sets the Gesha from Narino apart from other regions of Colombia, which typically lean purely toward floral and berry fruit notes.
Cupping note: Jasmine, Lavender, Passion Fruit, Peach, Cocoa, Marshmallow
